Its India SMS pricing is reported at roughly 12–25 paise per message depending on volume and route, OTPs around ₹0.20, and WhatsApp at Meta's conversation price plus a ₹500-per-number monthly platform fee that it waives for the first two months, per its WhatsApp pricing guide and SMS pricing page.

The neutral read: both price per message and step down with volume, and MSG91's published rates make it easy to model today. The per-number WhatsApp subscription is a fixed cost worth modelling if you run many numbers at low volume. Until our rates are published, compare on your own volume and route rather than on a headline number from either side.

One thing true on both sides: the sticker rate is rarely the whole bill. Sender-ID rentals, DLT or premium-support charges, WhatsApp per-number fees, and any minimum commitment all move the real number. Price a representative month — your actual SMS volume by route, your WhatsApp conversation mix by category, and any fixed fees — rather than a single per-unit figure. That full-month calculation is the one we'd rather help you run than win on a headline rate.

SMSAPI covers SMS, OTP, WhatsApp, RCS, voice broadcasting, IVR, and the numbers behind them. It does not offer bulk email in this version — that's a deliberate scope choice, not an oversight.

MSG91 covers the same messaging and voice channels and adds Email, plus higher-level products: a support inbox (Hello), event-based campaigns, and a customer-data platform (Segmento), per its website.

The overlap on messaging is heavy. If you want email and a broader communications suite from one vendor, MSG91 covers more ground. If you want messaging and voice without the wider platform, SMSAPI is narrower by design — fewer products to learn, fewer you pay for and don't use.

A narrower catalogue isn't automatically worse. Every extra product in a suite is one more thing to configure, secure, and pay for, and most teams use a fraction of what they buy. The honest question is whether you'll genuinely use email and the higher-level tools, or whether you mainly need messaging and voice done well. In the first case a broader suite earns its keep; in the second, a focused provider is simply less to manage and less shelf-ware to pay for.

SMSAPI registers your sender headers and message templates with you, and validates your principal entity and template IDs on every send, so a miscategorised message fails fast rather than being scrubbed. That help is part of onboarding, not a separate line item.

MSG91 also handles the full DLT setup and assigns a dedicated DLT expert, offered under a chargeable DLT Premium Support plan, per its help centre.

Both get you registered and compliant. The difference is packaging: MSG91 surfaces premium DLT help as a paid add-on, while SMSAPI bundles the registration support. Confirm what's included versus chargeable for the level of hand-holding you expect.

If DLT is new to you, weigh how the help is delivered, not just whether it exists. A first registration involves your principal entity, your headers, and a template per message type, and the most common delay is a template whose category doesn't match its content. What you want is someone who drafts and classifies templates with you so they pass the first time — whether that's bundled, as with SMSAPI, or a paid tier, as with MSG91, is a cost to settle before you commit, not after a rejection.

SMSAPI is plain JSON over HTTPS with a bearer token, quickstarts in cURL, Node.js, PHP, Python, and Java, send-and-verify OTP endpoints, and delivery webhooks. The docs are lean and focused on the messaging primitives.

MSG91 provides well-documented APIs at docs.msg91.com and mobile apps; the specific server-side SDK languages aren't stated on its overview, so we don't list them.

Both are API-first with public documentation. MSG91 is the more established platform with a larger product surface; SMSAPI's surface is smaller and more focused. Evaluate each against the exact endpoints you need rather than the breadth of the catalogue.

For a developer, the deciding factor is usually time-to-first-message and how failures surface. Look for a complete request and response in a language you actually use, clear error codes you can branch on rather than parse, and delivery webhooks so you reconcile by message ID instead of polling. Both providers publish docs, so the fair test is to send one real message through each and see how fast a delivery receipt comes back and how legible the errors are when something is wrong.

SMSAPI is the smaller, more hands-on operator, with support in Indian time zones and DLT onboarding done with you rather than handed to you.

MSG91 publishes substantial scale on its site — figures in the order of 2.5 billion API calls and 1.6 billion SMS a month, and 30,000+ businesses — and offers its deeper DLT support as a paid plan.

If proven scale and a large install base reassure you most, that favours MSG91. If a direct, hands-on relationship and bundled onboarding matter more, that favours SMSAPI. Neither is wrong; they're different buying experiences.

Scale cuts both ways. A very large platform has proven it can carry volume, which de-risks a big rollout; a smaller one can often give you a named contact who picks up and knows your account. Decide which failure you'd rather avoid — being one ticket among tens of thousands, or trusting a smaller operator with a critical launch — because that preference, more than any single feature, tends to settle this kind of choice.
