Receive SMS on a 10-digit long code
A long code is a standard 10-digit virtual number customers can text. Use it to receive replies, run keyword campaigns, and hold two-way conversations over SMS — without the cost or lead time of a premium short code.
When to use a long code
A long code — a virtual mobile number, or VMN — looks like an ordinary mobile number and is the simplest way to receive SMS. A customer texts it to opt in, reply to a message, or trigger a keyword, and the inbound message arrives on your webhook with the sender, the number it was sent to, and the body.
Long codes suit moderate inbound volume and two-way conversations — support replies, confirmations, feedback — where you don't need the throughput or the memorability of a short code. They are quicker to provision and cost less, so they are usually where a two-way use case starts.
Outbound still goes from your registered sender header under DLT; the long code is just the number customers reach you on. So a campaign can send from your header and collect replies on the long code, keeping the send and the reply in one thread.
You can run keywords on a long code — text JOIN to opt in, STOP to opt out — and route each keyword to a different flow. Replies and keywords are simply inbound events on the same webhook, so there is nothing extra to integrate once you are receiving.

Frequently asked
What's the difference between a long code and a short code?
A long code is a 10-digit virtual number, quick and inexpensive to set up, suited to moderate inbound volume and two-way conversations. A short code is a 5–6 digit number, easier to remember and built for high-throughput keyword campaigns, but it costs more and takes longer to provision.
How much inbound traffic can a long code handle?
Enough for conversations, support replies, and moderate keyword campaigns. For very high-volume inbound — a national keyword campaign on a poster — a short code is built for the throughput. We'll tell you which fits the volume you expect.
Can I run keywords on a long code?
Yes. You can route keywords like JOIN, STOP, and your own terms to different handlers, with opt-out keywords honoured automatically. Each inbound message arrives on your webhook with the keyword and body so you can act on it.
Does a long code change how I send?
No. Outbound still sends from your registered DLT sender header. The long code is the number customers reach you on for replies and keywords, so two-way adds an inbound leg without changing your send.
